The Dangers of Leaving God’s Will

Proverbs 27:8 (Dissected and Defined): As a bird that wandereth (departs) from her nest (home), so is a man that wandereth from his place (God given position).

Daily Dévo Paraphrase: There is great danger when we wander from God’s will.  A bird will leave his home for a multitude of reasons.  Fear of failure to find food, restlessness, curiosity, and rebellion are a few.  Yet when a bird leaves her home, she becomes vulnerable to dangers that are outside her realm of control.  Her life is in God’s hands.  She cannot even fall to the earth without Him knowing it and allowing it.  My fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Stodola  taught me that His eye is on the sparrow!

Likewise He watches me.  God has given me a particular place in which He intends for me to dwell.  But I am prone to wander!  When I do, what are my reasons?  Often they are similar to the bird’s.  I am not content with my provisions in life.  I become possession centered.  I get bored with the inactivity of my life.  I get curious about what others are enjoying.  I rebel against the drudgery of my day-to-day duties.

Many Christians have left God’s will only to fly in the face of disaster.  Why?  Because we  can fly, that’s why.  “Why did God give me wings, if he doesn’t want me to fly?” cries the bird as he soars toward his final fate.  Oh how often do we leave God’s will because we know how!  Just because He will allow us to fly, does not mean that He won’t let us die.  I think it’s better to stay in the position that God has placed us.

But if God so desires, then let your patience with your position move you over time.  For eventually, seasons will change.  Things will get cold, wet, and dreary.  He will lead you to take flight in the night and fly with all your might!  But when you do, you will see the climate has become much hotter.  You see, the dangers of flight are greater than the dangers of contentment.

“Prone to wander, Lord I feel it.  Prone to leave the God I love.”  Don’t wander over yonder!
