Proverbs 23:10-11 says, “Remove not the old landmark (boundary); and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: For their redeemer (deliverer from captivity) is mighty; he shall plead (defend) their cause (contest) with thee.”
In Solomon’s years of ruling a peaceful land, he had learned that there are just some boundaries you don’t violate. One such boundary is the protection God has placed over the fatherless. Yet, these verses also contain a Hidden meaning for us today.
God gave us fathers to be a picture of our heavenly Father. One’s understanding of God is intended to be shaped by the role model of their earthly father. Those who do not have a father figure have a special place in God’s heart. Psalm 68:5 promises that He will be their Father. Psalm 27:10 says, “When thy father and thy mother forsake thee, then the Lord will take you up.”
In the age of grace, our boundaries are best defined by the Word of God and the indwelling Spirit of God. With these truths in mind, I believe that Solomon is warning us to be careful to meet our obligations to those without an earthly father. The Old Testament obligations require it, and the Spirit of God will influence you to follow that landmark!
If there were ever a generation to be defined as “fatherless,” it would be ours. According to James 1:27, pure religion is defined partially by our willingness to care for the needs of the fatherless!
As a result, how do we view those little hoodlums that seem to be such a blight to our society? Do you see them as God sees them? He sees them as orphans in need of Him.
Yes, He will be their father, but it will require us to yield to the Spirit that is pleading their cause within us. If we do not heed Him, then they will never know that they need Him.
If we don’t bring them to the Father, they will probably never have one. Be sure to be thankful for your heavenly and earthly daddy.
