God will do His part, but you must do your part. Do you need to make a commitment even in this area? Perhaps you ought to set up boundaries that will keep you on track with your commitments. Such as, I will not eat unless I have prayed… and I will not sleep unless I have read my Bible. Ask God to give you the ability to get out of bed to spend time with Him. I guarantee He will prompt you of that, but if you ignore it, don’t expect God to protect your path. You are walking in darkness. You are going to run into something and get hurt. It is that simple.
The Bible says in Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust (have confidence) in the LORD with all thine heart (mind, will and emotions); and lean not unto (don’t depend on) thine own understanding (thought processes). In all thy ways acknowledge him (see that He is real), and he shall direct (straighten) thy paths. We know that God will protect our path, but when God casts the light, we’re must have the confidence to walk in it. We cannot ask God to change our life, and not obey Him when He leads us.
Jacob also depended on God to meet His needs. He will meet your needs too! Jesus commanded us in Matthew 6:25, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment. Jesus is saying here, “Don’t put thought into how your basic needs of food and clothing are going to be met.” At the time Jesus said this, there wasn’t a Wal-mart on every corner.
Back in Bible days, their life existed all day and late into the night trying to find food for the next day. It would not make sense to them back then for life to be more than that. But God was promising, even back then, that He will meet all our needs. You can focus on something else other than your own self-preservation. You don’t have to worry about your portfolio. God has got your portfolio locked up. He is going to take care of you.
By the way, for those of you who want to focus on your portfolios, how well have you done so far? When I walked into North Love Baptist Church for the first time in ten years, I was $20,000 in debt. Within one year I was debt free. Within two years I had $10,000 in the bank. Within three years I had a home and a beautiful wife. And within four years I was making over $100,000 a year working in the oil business. I can do all things with Christ. That strengthens me.
Let God meet your needs. Jacob rested in God’s provision, depended on His presence and protection. God never let Jacob down. Therefore, Jacob fulfilled his vow to God—He would make Him God of his life.
